The Courtauld Legacy

The Courtauld family ran an empire of textile businesses from the 18th until the 20th century. It all began with George Courtauld who began George Courtauld & Co. in 1794, however, by 1816, the company’s finances had been hit hard and business was failing. The business passed to his son, Samuel Courtald, who transformed the business into one of the leading textile businesses in Great Britain. The Courtauld name became synonymous with silverware, crepe, silk and man-made textiles right up to the 1900’s, with Samuel Courtauld, the great-nephew of the Samuel Courtauld who transformed the family business, taking hold of the reins in 1908 and continuing the family’s success for another 38 years.

Even though Samuel is known for being a Courtauld, he forged a legacy of his own that still stands strong today. As an avid art collector, favouring French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works, Samuel founded the Courtauld Institute of Art in 1932 which became linked to the University of London. It has become world-renowned for its studies on the history of art and art conservation and most of the world’s major museum directors are alumni of The Courtauld Institute of Art. Situated a short walk away from The Shaftesbury Marble Arch Suites, it offers simply one undergraduate course, which is a BA in the History of Art, and a range of Postgraduate studies such as Masters degrees in the History of Buddhist Art, Curating the Art Museum, Conservation of Wall Painting and the History of Art. In 1952, the co-founder of the Courtauld Institute, also bequeathed his extensive art collection of British drawings and the Old Masters to the gallery. Sir Robert Witt’s treasures contained 3000 drawings and 20,000 prints and English watercolours. From 1958 until the present day, several benefactors donated priceless artwork to the gallery; Pamela Diamand gave pieces by Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant and Dr William Wycliffe Spooner bequeathed a whole host of masterpieces from the likes of John Constable, Thomas Gainsborough, Alexander and John Robert Cozens, Samuel Palmer and Paul Sandby, amongst many others.

One of the most important exhibits in the gallery is the Gambier-Parry Collection. Donated by his grandson Mark Gambier-Parry, Thomas Gambier-Parry was an avid art collector and his collection contained some incredibly important works from across the continent. His artistic treasures mainly contained 1500-1600 pieces but, as time progressed, his tastes evolved and his collection grew to include works from the 1300-1400’s. The most important items were paintings, pottery and sculptures from the Medieval period right up to the beginning of the Renaissance; there is also a whole collection of Islamic metalwork, Hispano-Moresque ware and Byzantine wooden crosses which originated from Mount Athos in the North of Greece.

Some of the paintings included in the collection are:-

•    Coronation of the Virgin by Lorenzo Monaco: Dating from 1413, this depicts the virgin being crowned amongst saints, Jesus and the Madonna in paradise. This was a very popular image to depict in the 15th century, especially in Italy. There are two other panels on display by Lorenzo.

•    Fiesole Altarpiece by Fra Angelico: Friar Fra Angelico painted this commissioned piece between 1424-1425 and was placed in the side altar, where it remains today. It features Madonna, who sits upon a throne, holding a child in her arms while surrounded by angels and the saints Peter of Verona, Barnabas, Thomas of Aquino and Dominic of Verona.

There are late Renaissance artworks by Sassoferrato, Francesco Solimena, Boucicaut Master and Il Garofalo and incredible marble reliefs of the Virgin and Child, the most prominent was created by Mino da Fiesole. Most of the collection can be viewed on the Courtauld Gallery website, where 324 items of the Thomas Gambier-Parry exhibition are on display.

The Courtauld family not only made their mark within the textiles industry for over 200 years, but also within the art world. The Courtauld Gallery and Institute of Art have global recognition and have produced some of the leading museum curators, artists and critics of our time. Starting at the London Premier Notting Hill, head down Prince’s Square and turn right; this road contains two beautiful places of worship, Saint Sophia Greek Cathedral and New West End Synagogue. Saint Sophia is a grand building built in the Byzantine Revival style and has been part of the Greek Orthodox community since the late 19th century. New West End Synagogue is a beautiful Victorian structure with ornate stain glass windows and it is the oldest synagogue in Great Britain that is still actively in use today. St Petersburgh Place ends directly opposite Kensington Gardens, one of the most luscious parks in London.

Kensington Gardens was used as a hunting ground during the reign on Henry VIII and it was separated from Hyde Park in 1728. Part of the Serpentine runs through Kensington Gardens, it is known as The Long Water, and it ends at the Italian Gardens. Near this divide lies some of the most famous statues in London, The Albert Memorial, Physical Energy Statue and the Peter Pan Statue, as well as the Serpentine Gallery which holds some of the best contemporary art pieces in the world. The must see part of the gardens is, of course, Kensington Palace which was built in 1605 and expanded in 1689 at the request of King William and Queen Mary. It has been the home of many royals such as Queen Anne, King George I, King George II and Princess Diana. In 1997, after the tragic death of the People’s Princess, the grounds of the palace were inundated with over one million flowers as a sign of grief, loss and remembrance. Today, the palace is home to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte and Prince Harry.

From Kensington Gardens there are a choice of routes; you can either leave the gardens and take a trip through Knightsbridge and visit the world famous department store, Harrods, that contains a plethora of floors and rooms containing treasures such as designer clothes, toys, beauty, food halls, pet shop, a bank and a barbers amongst other things, or you can take a trip through Hyde Park. Attached to Kensington Gardens, Hyde Park is one of the most famous parks in Britain, mainly due to it hosting festivals, concerts and Winter Wonderland every year. A walk through the park will allow you to explore the Serpentine and the legendary Speakers Corner where many a protest and Freedom of Speech has been exercised in its entirety.

From Hyde Park you cross through to Wellington Arch, a memorial to Arthur Wellesley, one of the greatest Duke’s that Britain has ever known. A short walk away is Apsley House, the home of the Duke of Wellington which has now been transformed into a museum in his honour and showcasing his fine art collection. The walk then takes you along Constitution Hill and past Buckingham Palace, the current home of Queen Elizabeth II, which contains a staggering 770 rooms. Along Birdcage Walk takes you directly outside Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, one of the most iconic images of London and Great Britain. The original palace was built in the Middle Ages and used as the main royal residence by the reigning monarchs until the 16th century where it was partly damaged by a fire. Once rebuilt, it became the centre of politics, holding Parliament and the Royal Courts of Justice until 1834 when a fire completely destroyed the entire palace. From 1840-1870 it was rebuilt in a Gothic Revival style and it now houses the House of Commons and the House of Lords. There are tours of the palace and it is well worth a trip.

The journey then takes you over Westminster Bridge where you have a stunning view up and down the River Thames and a breathtaking perspective of the Houses of Parliament. At the end of the bridge, take a left and follow the Thames up Southbank. Southbank is a vibrant part of London, filled with shops, restaurants, book stalls and street artists and is a popular tourist spot. The Sealife Centre is a great place to take your family as there is an opportunity to touch and feed some of the aqua life as well as seeing species from all over the world. Less than two minutes walk from the Sealife Centre lies your destination, the London Eye. This majestic landmark has been an important part of London since its unveiling and gives visitors an astounding view of the city; it even offers private pod bookings and even wedding packages.

Great music venues in London

In terms of music, the City of London has a terrific live music scene which is comparable to the finest in the world. Almost every night you will find gigs, musical performances and musical shows all around London.  Music lovers who are in the city will be overwhelmed by the variety of music venues to be found, which cater to all genres.

The Brixton Academy is a favourite among most of the young crowd and its top stalls and slanting floor make it a fun place to be. The XX is another cool venue for gigs with many great performances and musical events being staged here. It lies beneath the rail arches at Shoreditch and houses a slap dash bar with exposed brick walls that give it laid back and cool appearance. A great place to hang out with the lads!

Shepherd’s Bush Empire the name sound almost legendary and it feels as great when you pop in. It is managed like most other places by a telecom company O2, which calls the shots but it has managed to retain its own unique charm and vibrant atmosphere. It is spacious and can accommodate a large number of people and has played host to some gigs over the years. The atmosphere at KoKo is just super cool and one of its most attractive aspects is its theatre layout, which offers ample viewing space at the venue. It is designed in a way that offers visitors the choice of being in any of its four layers. There have been some superb performances and gigs hosted here, which makes it definitely the place to spend a fabulous evening at.

Bush Hall may not be as famous as its neighbor the Empire but still retains a distinctive charm of its own. It is ornately decorated and has a stunning baroque hall with incredibly high ceilings that assist in giving it excellent acoustics. It also has a separate bar to enjoy your drinks away from the gig going on inside. Its atmosphere is redolent of that of a venue that hosts wedding receptions and has greats like REM, The Killers and Sugababes play here. 

When in Soho travel to Brewer Street, which lies in its very centre and where you will find Madame JoJo's. It was like any other nightclub, till real estate tycoon Paul Raymond bought it and thoroughly transformed the place. In the process he had art deco fittings moved over from Whitehall Theatre to Madame JoJo's, which gives it a glitzy look and feel. When you move downstairs you will feel as if you have stepped back into the 1970s with the carpeted walls, geometric railings and red and gold sequined drapes etc. 

More and more chapels and churches are used for musical worship these days with Union Chapel being one of them. It was built in 1877 and has earned the distinction of being a Time Out live venue a few years ago in 2002. It has a great atmosphere suited for intimate concerts with an awesome gothic styled interior, exposed stone wall, a large octagonal chapel and wraparound balconies etc. It is the venue for Little Noise Sessions an event hosted annually, which has seen musical greats like Coldplay and Amy Winehouse perform here. 

Visit the Lexington and you will find this imposing corner pub has an atmosphere that is a mix of an old English pub and an American lounge bar. The first thing that attracts your attention is the massive chandelier that hangs in the area where the main bar is situated with an animal skull peering down from the wall. Move downstairs and you will find a luxurious and relaxed ambience that makes it a pleasurable place to spend a musical evening at.

Move to the area of Dalston, which is famous for its vibrant arts community and you will find Cafe Oto. It is relatively new having opened in 2008 but has managed to carve a niche as a fantastic venue for alternate music genres. Artists such as Miki

Yui, Rolf Julius and Ghedelia Tazartes have performed here. Its minimalistic ambience with plain white walls minus a stage, makes it ideal for bands to express themselves without any genteel vibes to live up to.

Hyde Park is right next to Marble Arch as well as Kensington Palace, the official home of Prince William. It is no secret that London is one of the busiest cities in the world and that can make travelling around London as a family seem like a daunting option.  It may even put you off booking your trip in the first place; but it really needn’t feel like that!  London is an exciting place for children of all ages and travelling around is really quite manageable if you just take that little bit extra time when planning your visit.  These different travel options needn’t break the bank either, which is ideal if you are a larger family trying to spend some quality time together in this wonderful and historical city.

The first thing to understand is that London does get busy at certain times of the day.  These are typically commuter hours and are between 7-9am and 5.30-7pm on weekdays.  If it is possible to travel outside of these times you will find your journey remarkably less crowded and less stressful.  This is particularly key if you are journeying with young children or have a pushchair to navigate through the busy crowds.  Catching a tube or a bus just half an hour after commuter time will make a noticeable difference to whether you are jostling for space and whether you are likely to get a seat.  These commuter hours also apply to car traffic and we would suggest avoiding travelling by car if at all possible.  It is not necessary to get from A to B within London itself so car hire would only be recommended if you wanted to venture out of the city to some of the wonderful surrounding cities and towns although these are all easily accessible by public transport.

London has an extremely versatile and comprehensive public transport network and it can offer a very cost effective way of getting around the city, particularly if you have a lot to cram into your visit.  All of the following methods of transport cover the whole city of London and are easily accessible whether you are staying somewhere central such as The Shaftesbury Premier London Paddington or further afield.   We will cover some of the major offerings along with our tips for when travelling with children which will hopefully help you to decide which method of transport would best suit you during your visit to the capital city:-

The Tube
Without a doubt one of the most practical and cheap ways of getting around London is the underground or ‘the tube’.  Greater London is connected by 12 tube lines alongside the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and a local train network as well.  The tube trains typically run between 5am and midnight, Monday to Saturday and with reduced operating hours on Sunday.  Transport for London operate the tube and they have produced free maps which can be picked up from most tube stations around the city.  These will assist you in planning which route you need to take to get to various parts of the capital. 

It is worth bearing in mind that the tube is one of the busiest modes of transport during rush hour with people literally cramming themselves into every available space on the trains as they pass through.  If you have young children and/or pushchairs it is definitely worth avoiding commuter hours.  Other useful tips to keep handy include:-

checking the front of the train for its destination as it pulls into the station to ensure you have the correct one;

• Stand to the right when using escalators;
• Wait for passengers to disembark before trying to board;
• Stand behind the yellow line whilst waiting for the train; and
• Hold onto the rails when the train is moving.

Going underground to catch the train can be a particularly exciting time for children but also a worrying one.  Make sure you stand well back and be aware that the trains can be quite loud and noisy which may make some children jump.  You should also be wary of the gap between the train and the platform edge and assist younger children in boarding the train safely.  If you are travelling with a pushchair then be sure to check your tube map carefully; many of the stations are only accessible via steps which are not ideal if you are travelling on your own with a pushchair and have no-one to assist you in getting up and down.  Accessibly and step-free stations are marked on the map which should help you when it comes to planning your journey.

Buses
London’s red buses are not only an iconic piece of London’s background but they also offer a cheap and easy way to navigate around the city.  Not having to disappear underground on the tube means that you get to see the city around you as you travel from A to B as well which can be exciting for children and adults alike.  There are also a number of bus tours which operate and will take you to various well known landmarks and attractions.  These can be a cost-effective way of combining your travel costs with visiting memorable places in the city.  Many of the bus tours also offer additional commentary which can provide interesting insight into the city of London as well.

River Bus Service
Another exciting way to travel around is by river bus.  These operate in much the same way as the tube and the buses, with many stops around Central London and beyond.  Travelling along the iconic River Thames is exhilarating enough on its own but you will also be given the chance to see some of London’s most iconic landmarks from a different perspective which makes the journey well worth it.

Fares
When it comes to fares, all of the above can be covered with an Oyster Card; Transport for London’s electronic smartcard system.  You can purchase a Visitor Oyster Card which comes preloaded with your chosen amount of credit and then you simply swipe the card in front of the card reader at the tube station or when boarding the bus etc.  You can order your Visitor Oyster Card in advance of your journey and have it delivered to your home address or purchase one when you arrive in the city.  They are the easiest and cheapest way of getting around London, especially if you are staying in London for a number of days.

The roundhouse, best place to know about

London is a versatile place and you may find many good places of interest here. If you are a lover of history then surely you may like to visit the Roundhouse. This is a great place to know about.

The Roundhouse is a previously listed railway engine shed of grade II located in London chalk form. Now it has been transformed into a best venue for occasions, concerts and performing various arts. This was initially constructed in the year 1847. The construction work was done by the London and North Western Railway. This was built as a roundhouse in form of a circular building with a railway turntable,however it was used only for this reason for just ten years and after that is was being utilized as a warehouse for a long period of time. After that the building was demolished before the Second World War, it was closed for a long time. After about 25 years the building was reopened in the year 1964 in form of a venue for events and performing arts. Then the building was established as a theatre.
